Come be part of OBIE award-winning playwright and performer Deb Margolin's newest work in progress "A Brief History of the Telephone." Deb insists that when a young person's phone rings, they call the police, because they never heard that sound before. Is that you?

Let's chit chat and chew the fat, as Deb explores a lifelong passion for the sexy, disembodied possibilities of talking with friends and strangers on the phone. At this show, not only can you leave your hat on, you can leave your phone on! You can call Deb during the show if you want! The Northampton Center for the Arts (NCFA), a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that provides affordable space for artists, performers, and educators, and offers programming dedicated to arts education, multidisciplinary collaborations, and community connections, has been serving Northampton and the larger Valley for 40 years. To ensure we can keep that track record going, we are thrilled to be hosting our fourth annual Revelry at 33 fundraising event on Saturday, April 26!

Revelry at 33 is a unique celebration that takes place in our beautifully renovated home at 33 Hawley Street. This year, we’re embracing the theme “There’s No Place Like Home” with:

• Live music, short performances, and a lively Emerald City atmosphere.

• Delicious food and desserts by Seth Mias Catering, plus tasty signature cocktails

• A silent auction featuring exciting items, and an art sale showcasing works from over 35 talented local artists—supporting both the artists and NCFA. For more on the art exhibit, click here!

Join us at the Split Level Gallery for the Northampton High School student show and senior show, Playground! From stunning portraiture to captivating still life and impressive sculptures, the Northampton High School students have poured their creativity into an inspiring showcase of their work.

An Evening of Dance Works by Barbie Diewald and Collaborators

Lexicon is an evening of developing and revisited dance works by choreographer Barbie Diewald and her collaborators. The program opens with Seven Sundays, a solo Diewald originally choreographed and performed in 2014, now performed by Mount Holyoke College student Robyn Pilecki. Next, Diewald joins longtime collaborator Meredith Bove in an untitled duet exploring intimacy, distance, voice, and familial histories. The evening culminates in a preview of Lexicon, an ongoing work begun in 2023. A companion to Diewald’s archival research on queer and lesbian aesthetics, Lexicon reflects a deeply collaborative process with Massachusetts and New York based artists Julia Antinozzi, Gabby Carmichael, Ellie Goudie-Averill, Leah Fournier, Chloe London, and Jenna Riegel.

Originally from the midwest, Barbie Diewald is a dancer, choreographer and Assistant Professor of Dance at Mount Holyoke College.  She is a Massachusetts Cultural Council Fellow in Choreography and New England Foundation for the Arts New Work New England Grant Recipient. Her dances have been presented in New York at BAM, the 92nd Street Y, Movement Research at the Judson Church, Brooklyn Arts Exchange, University Settlement, The Center for Performance Research, The Chocolate Factory, and The Kitchen, and in New England at the Academy of Music Theatre, A.P.E Gallery, The School for Contemporary Dance and Thought, High Street Studios, Motion State Arts Festival, and MAGMA (Movement Arts Gloucester). Diewald has developed her work through residencies at Jacob’s Pillow, Bates Dance Festival, the Bogliasco Foundation, The Iron Factory, Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity, Cleveland School for the Arts, Ponderosa, Subcircle and SILO at Kirkland Farm. She is a recent Jacob’s Pillow faculty research fellow, and has presented her research at conferences held by the Dance Studies Association, National Dance Education Organization, and International Somatic Movement Education and Therapy Association.  Diewald holds a BFA in Theatre from Millikin University and MFA in Dance from Smith College.www.barbiediewald.com

Local artists Paige Quinn-Vasic, Michael Sjostedt, and Maddie McDougall will share their work and participate in a panel discussion focused on the pressing importance of making and teaching in the local arts ecosystem. This event is a collaboration between the Northampton Center for the Arts and the Smith College Teaching Artists Program through the Jandon Education Initiative. It was created as a vehicle to connect Smith students with local teaching artists and is free and open to the public!

Live Music by Mary Witt & Annie Patterson

Annie Patterson and Mary Witt love to sing and play together. They blend their soulful voices in swing, jazz, blues, folk, and Motown with guitar, bass, cajon, and banjo. 

Annie is the co-creator of the popular songbook Rise Up Singing. She brings years of songleading and working for change to all her performances. Annie sings with the Swing band Girls from Mars (Philly-based). More about Annie: Rise Up and Sing. Mary Witt, singer, bass player, and bandleader for The O-Tones, lends her alto voice and grooving bass playing from 30 years performing weddings, parties, fundraisers, and more with the band, as well as growing up singing sister harmonies.

The Northampton Center for the Arts presents El Telar De Un Sueño by Pamela Acosta, featuring a varied collection of illustrations, paintings, mixed media, and paper-cut art. The exhibit El Telar De Un Sueño or Looming Dreams intertwines figurative narratives with visual poetry and elements of magical realism, highlighting the beauty of nature.

A.P.E. Ltd. presents Hydroponically Speaking by Katie Jurkiewicz, which promises to be a powerful and thought-provoking exhibition, offering a unique perspective on nature’s beauty and fragility. Jurkiewicz’s use of color and form brings the natural world to life in ways that are at once striking and serene.

Live Music by Nora Borealis and the SureFireCure

Nora Borealis (they/she) is a Western MA Valley area soprano, multi-instrumental singer-songwriter, & voice teacher. Expect vocal harmonies + lush chords + lyrics that walk the slack-line between an existential void and the sublime cosmic flow of all things. Wherever you are, they hope you will take the plunge and sing more, especially with your chosen family. You can find them on Bandcamp, and on Spotify as SureFire Cure. 

Nora Borealis and the SureFireCure is a rotating scene of folk and Polyjamerous musicians supporting each others' projects and creating community wherever they roam.

A Paint ‘n’ Sip Fundraiser in support of NCFA’s COmmunity Fund

Are you dreaming of spring? Invite those early flowers in, and help raise funds for a wonderful cause! Since its inception in 2021, the Northampton Center for the Arts’ Community Fund has provided almost $20,000 to people in our community who need financial support to access arts space and classes. But the fund is not unlimited and we must figure out ways to regenerate so we can continue this good work. So please join us for an all inclusive Paint ‘n‘ Sip fundraiser on March 9th at 4pm. In this workshop, you'll create your own spring flowers with acrylics on canvas! Enjoy a relaxed, welcoming environment where you can explore color harmonies and connect with a welcoming community. Alcoholic and NA drinks, snacks, and art materials are provided, so just bring your creativity. No prior experience needed—just sip, paint, have fun, and go home with a piece of art painted by your very own creative hands!

About the Instructor: For the past 20 years, Natania Hume has been a passionate art /painting teacher at a local independent school, inspiring high school students with her belief in the power of creativity and a mission to make artistic expression available to all. In addition to her teaching, Natania is an accomplished potter, having created the Slow Studio line of pottery. Her love for both painting and pottery reflects her commitment to exploring and sharing diverse artistic mediums. Raised in the Pioneer Valley, she has long been an active member of the valley's artistic community, and currently serves on the board of directors for NCFA. Natania lives in Easthampton, MA with her family.

Join us for the Valley’s popular jazz piano series! In 1995, the Northampton Center for the Arts asked long-time Connecticut River Valley jazz producer Glenn Siegel to produce a solo piano series, and A World of Piano was born. Throughout its history, the A World of Piano has sought to present a wide variety of approaches to the instrument. The series resumed in 2003 and continued until 2013, when NCFA lost its former space on South St.

Now firmly re-established at 33 Hawley, the Northampton Center for the Arts and Pioneer Valley Jazz Shares have resurrected A World of Piano. On February 27-March 1, 2025, the series continues with performances by pianists Matthew Shipp, Greg Burk, and Sylvie Courvoisier. Come to one concert or all three!

The Northampton Center for the Arts presents Headspace in the Barn Door Gallery. Headspace is a collection of large-scale heads made from cardboard, paint, hot glue, and recycled trash. This installation, along with other handmade decorations, invites you into the creative world of Connor O'Rourke's Headspace. It offers a vibrant and playful environment that encourages self-reflection and curiosity, featuring over a hundred unique characters.

A.P.E. Ltd. presents If These Feet Could Fly, which is a collection of paintings by Natasha Wein, created with her feet as she navigates her body's deterioration. She expresses a desire to continue loving life despite her struggles and uses her art to document her experiences, transforming her brokenness into a vibrant mosaic.

Live Music by Gregory Boover

Gregory Boover is a multi-faceted artist based in the Berkshires of Massachusetts. He has collaborated in a number of venues across the East Coast, most recently including The Hanover Theatre, and has directed/taught in the education programs at Shakespeare & Company and serves on the faculty at Community Access To The Arts in Great Barrington, MA.

Please join us for the 2025 Youth Performance Festival (YPF), and enjoy performances and presentations by dozens of local youth artists! All work is original and created by young artists ages 8-18. You’ll see solo pieces as well as collaborations between young artists, and every field of performing art is represented! YPF is an outstanding festival experience that warms hearts and inspires creativity in audience members of all ages!

The Youth Performance Festival is a collaborative program of Play Incubation Collective and the Northampton Center for the Arts at 33 Hawley, in partnership with Make-It Springfield. Now in its 6th year, YPF is a FREE opportunity for youth artists ages 8-18 to create original performance pieces with the guidance of mentor artists in the fields of music, dance, theater, poetry/spoken word, video/animation, and more. YPF centers the creative agency of young artists, and is committed to supporting them as they discover their own creative processes. For YPF 2025, we are partnering with Make-It Springfield for the second year to offer a Springfield-based youth cohort in addition to the Northampton cohort as part of the long term goal to expand YPF in Western Mass.

The Northampton Center for the Arts presents Nexus: The Ties That Bind in the Barn Door Gallery. Each year, the January exhibit features artwork from Curatorial Committee members or artists of their choosing. Join us in celebrating this year's dynamic nexus of the local arts community as these creative minds unite, showcasing their work and reinforcing the spirit of collaboration and support within the local art scene. Don’t miss the chance to experience the vibrant expressions of our community!

A.P.E. Ltd. presents Remember to Remember, which brings together the works of Emine Cichowski, Muriel “Monik” Johnson, and many artists from The Care Center. Spanning multiple mediums, the exhibition offers a dynamic lens into dreams, memory, and daring expression.

Head downstairs to Eli’s Room for a Noho Art Club meet-up from 5:00-7:30 PM hosted by Paige Quinn-Vasic! Come play with collage and gelli plate printing, and check out Paige’s felt sushi demo, an original wet felting technique offered as a workshop through the Center!

The Northampton Center for the Arts presents Wallflower Wawa in the Barn Door Gallery. Paintings and wall sculptures by Nickolas Roblee-Strauss and Jacqueline Strauss explore the melodramas of less obvious party guests. Through the use of color, pattern, and a playful reinvention of form, this exhibit invites us to celebrate and encourages us to examine the perimeter, revealing the blossoms that emerge from the walls.

The Quabbin Art Association, in partnership with the Northampton Center for the Arts, presents New Voices, New Perspectives in the Split Level Gallery. This exhibition features 20 emerging artists from nine universities and colleges in the Connecticut River Valley area who are pursuing careers in the visual arts. Come and see the talented artists gathered by QAA in this new initiative, designed to create opportunities for these emerging creatives!

Music by River Valley Jazz Ensemble

This group first connected during the Jazz in July workshop program at UMass Amherst and the Vermont Jazz Center Summer Workshops in the summer of 2024. They have been jamming together ever since. Get ready to hear the smooth tones of Drew Jones, Andy Kivela, Bill Pastuszek, Aaron O. Reyes, and Ascher Savage.

The Northampton Center for the Arts will hold its annual building-wide Artisan Fair on Saturday, November 30th, 2024 (Small Business Saturday!), from 10:00am to 4:00pm at 33 Hawley. With over 55 talented local artists and artisans selling their work, refreshments and coffee available throughout the day, and live music by local musicians, this fair has quickly become a seasonal favorite!

Live music by Carrie Ferguson (11am) , Kim Chin-Gibbons (12:30pm), and Lily Sexton (2pm)!

The Northampton Center for the Arts presents Pliable Entanglements in the Barn Door Gallery. This exhibition, featuring the works of Eva Barajas, María Sparrow, and Ross Momaney, invites viewers to reflect on their past, present, and future while recognizing the flexible connections that bind us to the lives around us. The exhibit encourages us to appreciate the subtle and invisible ties that unite us all, emphasizing the idea that our observations and interactions continuously shape and connect us in profound ways.

Stay for an Artist Talk at 7:30 pm in the Barn Door Gallery!

We’re excited to present two exhibits in the Split Level Gallery this month! Everyday/Every Day can be seen on the Mezzanine level, and features the works of Deb Lohmeyer, Joyce Lak, and Nancy Lowry. During the global pandemic, these artists started a peer-to-peer group sharing a "photo a day" project to stay connected. They took and shared daily photos on Instagram, which improved their photography skills and helped them notice and appreciate the beauty in everyday life. Whether in their hometown or exploring new places, the project encouraged them to pay closer attention to the wonders around them.

Continue to the lower level of the Split Level Gallery to see Home, Freedom, Beauty by Adeyemi Adebayo. The work explores the themes of home, beauty, and freedom through the lens of solitude, disposition, and the longing for home. The work focuses on the human disposition in different states and across time, emphasizing the quiet, contemplative, yet revealing nature of people as they navigate through life, leisure, and struggles for freedom.

Music by Infinite Sun

Infinite Sun is the rock and acoustic duo of Erik Vegeto and Jake Tuvek, celebrated for their chill, melodic tunes and heartfelt performances throughout Western Mass. Their music embodies a belief in radical acceptance and transformative compassion, with lyrics that deeply resonate and foster a sense of community.

The Northampton Center for the Arts presents "In Light of Time" at the Barn Door Gallery. This group show features Laura Radwell, Mary Ann Kelly, and Carolyn Webb. The show celebrates their long-standing relationship with the Valley. They will be sharing their journeys of discovery for the first time together through painting, sculpture, prints, and drawings. Join us for this immersive experience!

The Barn Door Gallery Artist Opening Reception will be rescheduled as our artists are observing the Jewish holiday Yom Kippur! Instead, please join us for their Opening Reception on October 5th!

Don’t forget to check out the "Out of Context: Reimagining the Figure" exhibit at the Split Level Galley. This exhibit was put together by the Center for the Arts Figure Drawing Group. See the work and progress of your peers as they study the human figure and form. Explore the concepts and gestures that bring these figures to life!

Families and kids of all ages are encouraged to drop into Eli’s Room on the ground floor from 5:00-7:00pm for the Young Artists Studio, a new event series being offered in collaboration with the Teaching Artist Program through the Jandon Center for Community Engagement at Smith College.
